England’s Paul Casey is confident he can win the Porsche European Open this weekend as the tournament prepares to celebrate its 40th anniversary.
A world class field is set to head to the Green Eagle Golf Courses just a week after Francesco Molinari won The Open Championship at Carnoustie.
Casey, the world number 15, is one of the favourites for the event as he continues to sine on the PGA Tour this year.
He has secured top-20 finishes at two World Golf Championships so far as well as winning the Valspar Championship.
Casey placed in the top-20 at The Masters and U.S. Open and he insists the tournament means a lot to him.
The 41-year-old used to watch the tournament in his youth and admits he would love to join the list of famous winners, with the likes of Sir Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer,, Greg Norman and Sandy Lyle all lifting the trophy.
He told the European Tour’s official website: “It’s got great names on the trophy and it’s always been part of the fabric of the European Tour, trying to etch your name on that trophy alongside some of the greats of the game.”
“I’d love to put my name on that trophy, for sure.”
“It’s going to be a tough week but as I said I would love to win this one, my expectations are pretty high. I’m not just here for the good weather.”
“The game feels great. So far it?s been a solid year and there’s no change in that from last week. It was frustrating to be down the pack but it’s a different course this week and there’s no reason why I can’t challenge for the lead.”
